To Love a Chicken

Orginal Melissa Caughey- oyster cracker in garden

I knew that the day would eventually come.

I buried her underneath a beautiful hosta that still has not emerged from its winter slumber yet.

A few weeks ago, I said goodbye to my last original chicken, Oyster Cracker. It was one of the most difficult things that I had ever done. I guess it is why it took so long for me to write this post.

How Chickens Say Goodbye

Death is never easy. It is an unfortunate part of life but part of the bigger circle of our natural existence. I believe that everything enters our lives for a reason. Everything also exits our lives for reasons too, sometimes reasons that we don’t ever understand. It is even hard to understand the timing of things.  Everyone grieves over loss differently, I have seen many ways of coping working with patients and their families over the past 17 years. Yet, it doesn’t make thing easier when these things happen to you.

Farewell to Fuzzy

I got news today that one of my dear friend’s chickens passed away.  I am praying and hoping time will heal all sadness and grief.

Fuzzy  April 2010-October 2010

She will be missed dearly.  She was loved by her human family as well as her chicken family.  She was always up for new adventures.  She loved our friend Peanut and had great times helping him escape and “paint the coop red”!  She was a friendly little girl that enjoyed a good stroking of her feathers and was always curious and up for new adventures.  She was gentle with all children.  A soft and quiet soul who is now waiting at the “rainbow bridge” for her loved ones.

The Rainbow Bridge–Author Unknown

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….
