Make It: Farmhouse Christmas Tree Skirt

I love Christmas. It’s actually one of my favorite holidays.  Each year, we spend time as a family crafting because I love creating handmade items. Some of those items are gifts while others become a part of our decorations year after year. As a result, I wanted to share how to create a new Christmas tree skirt for your home. I thought it would be fun to bring in the trendy farmhouse chic look and come up with an easy and inexpensive and easy way to pretty up the tree this year.  I had so much fun making this tree skirt that I thought you might like to make one too!

Get Creative: Wintery Ice Skates Wreath

This week, I’m sharing my latest craft for DIY Network. I absolutely love shopping for all things vintage. A few weeks ago, I was at a holiday sale run by the talented ladies from Burlap and Buoys. One of my favorite vendors, had a metal bin full of old worn ice skates. I took a peek inside a white pair of ice skates. They were a size eight. A wee too small for my feet, but perfect for a wintery transformation. These ice skates would be the perfect way to add winter New England charm to the garden shed door. I’m so thrilled at how this ice skate wreath came together.

Make A Paper Village Advent Calendar

For the past six years, I’ve had the pleasure of  freelancing regularly for both HGTV and DIY Network, creating crafts, sharing chicken and bee wisdom and gardening galore. This week, my daughter and I were given the task of putting a new twist on the traditional advent calendar. I had considered creating a new calendar. It dawned on me that it would be fun to create a Christmas paper village advent calendar. It could light up as each new evening arrived. As a little girl, some of my fondest memories were of my Mother’s Christmas village.

Make An Embroidered Pet Silhouette

I was on assignment for DIY Network this past week. We’re celebrating Pet Love and what better way to show you care than to create a gorgeous pet silhouette of my editor’s pug. I’ve worked the past 6 years with the same editor at Scripps Network. She is amazing and super fun and has the most darling dog named Oskar. I wanted to surprise her with a keepsake. So, I asked here what were her favorite colors and got to work. Of course, she had to know what I was up to when I asked for a profile photo.

DIY: Miniature Chicken Garden

Oh winter, how do I miss my gardens and hanging outside with my flock as they meander around me. Today, instead of feeling glum, I decided to make a miniature chicken garden. Actually, I got a bit carried away and made a few. Once I got started I could not help myself.  As I planted up these sweet little gardens, I was envisioning being in my gardens with my own flock. I swear I could here these tiny little chickens carrying on, clucking as to which garden they wanted to explore.

Growing Paperwhites Indoors for the Holidays

One of my favorite things about the holiday season is growing bulbs indoors. I do this for both Christmas and Easter. There is something about growing flowers indoors during the chilly winter months.  During Christmastime, I especially love growing paperwhites. This is a fail-proof project for even those with a brown thumb. If you have grown paper whites in the past, I can bet that one of your biggest pet peeves and mine too is that when they grow tall they often flop over from gravity. Sure, there are ways to add things to the water to stunt their growth, but why harm the bulb? This year, I wanted to show you a simple and easy way to grow paperwhites without them falling over. I love to give these as gifts. They are simple and stunning and I’m going to show you how to make them!

DIY: Cinderella Succulent Topped Pumpkins

Last fall, I created the most fantastic succulent topped pumpkin for HGTV Gardens. It was so much fun and I loved seeing how it all came together so easily. This month I’ll be at the Country Living Fair doing a live demonstration on Saturday afternoon to share how simple and easy it is for you to create succulent topped pumpkins at home. I love creating each and everyone. No two succulent topped pumpkins are ever alike.

Create Colorful Paper Chicken Friends

This past week I presented at the Mother Earth News Fair in Seven Springs, PA.  Each year, one of my favorite things to do is meet up with the kids attending the fair. I love to get kids excited about art and put on a workshop just for them.  This past year we did bookmarks and this year I decided to inspire the kids’ creativity with paper chicken friends.

A Berry Sweet Pom Pom Craft

Original_Caughey-MelissaCaughey-strawberry pom pom 11

I used to love making pom poms as a little girls with my Mom. We would sit there for hours making them and putting them on hats, scarves and afghans that she knitted throughout the year. I was always intrigued with the “magic” of how the pom poms and tassels would come together. I’d watch her intensely, committing the techniques to memory in my seven year old mind. I can still “see” her working the yarn in her hands and fingers if I close my eyes. This past week, I decided to share my love of pom poms with my daughter.  She absolutely adores strawberries. So with that as our inspiration, we turned her favorite fruit into a sweet fluffy, bouncy ball of red and green strawberry pom pom for her backpack. I created a cardboard template that worked well with with her small hands and in no time we ended up with a dotted red pom pom ready for quite a hair cut.

Tissue Paper Peonies

Original_Caughey-MelissaCaughey-paperpeonies6

I adore peonies. I have loved them since I was a little girl. There is something magical about their fragrant, deep intoxicating blooms and the way that they announce the beginning of summer here in the Northeast. It’s been unseasonable cool here. Spring is taking forever to warm up. We have had a few teasers and then we are back into chilly evenings and cold rainy days. How I have longed for my peonies to show their red buds peeking up through the mulch. I’ve missed not seeing them for a whole year. This month I had the opportunity to submit a tissue paper craft to my DIY Network editor. I decided that I could not wait any longer and made some tissue paper peonies of my own.
