Coop Warming Party Giveaway

September 12, 2016

Over the weekend, my lucky chickens got a package in the mail from our friends over at Chubby Mealworms. Chubby Mealworms decided to throw the girls a coop warming party!  I could not believe how many wonderful things were inside this box. I was especially excited for my flock to try three new product that they had never had before. I could not wait to see their reactions.

First, the girls tried the Dried Chubby Superworms. These buggers are three times the size of regular mealworms that we all are accustomed to sharing with our flocks. I can not believe how big they are. The girls did not hesitate and dove beak first into the bucket!  I imagine that they looked amazing to the flock.

Take a peek at their reaction. Of course, I didn’t leave the entire tub in the coop with them. Those girls are piggies! They would have devoured the entire bin if I had let them.

In addition to a huge bin of regular mealworms, they also sent Freeze Dried Cubby Mealworms. Traditional mealworms go through a dehydration process that leaves them as hollow “shells”. The freeze drying process allows the mealworms to retain more “meat” which means more protein goodness for the flock.

Next up were the Dried Chubby Silk Worm Pupae. I had never seen these before and wondered what they would be like. These dried pupae are crispier, thicker, and meatier than mealworms.  Surprisingly, they did not smell bad at all. The silk worm pupae are a relatively new treat to the poultry industry. Studies have shown them to help to increase egg laying production. I thought the girls might be their usual nervous selves trying out this new food. It’s great that like mealworms, they can be soaked in warm water to reconstitute them. I also love that you can grind them up and add them to the feed.  I scooped up a handful and introduced them to the girls. I was surprised. They proved me wrong. There was zero hesitation. They could not gobble them up fast enough.

This coop warming party could not have arrived at a more perfect time. The girls are molting and they certainly could use a protein boost.  Boosting protein in the fall is a great way to help the flock through the molt and also help with egg production during this stressful time on their bodies. As you can see, most of my girls are looking a bit thin in the feathers. Every morning it’s like a chicken exploded in the coop. I’m glad it it temporary.
