Apple Mason Jar Pencil Holders

August 20, 2014

Do you like to surprise your teacher on the first day of school with a homemade gift from the heart? If so, delight your teachers on the first day back to school with these darling apple mason jar pencil holders!

Perfect for holding pencils, pens, rulers, and flowers they are so simple to make. A week before school started, the kids and I made this in one afternoon. They came together in no time at all and it was nice to see that kids of all ages could participate in making a gift to share with their teacher on the first day of school.
Of course you can get creative and use these to store just about anything. From erasers, candy, gummy worms and more just spray paint the lids green and you have a fun and creative gift jar.
Supply List:
Pint size mason jars
Red spray paint
Green card stock
Garden twine
Scissors
Pencils
Directions:
In a well ventilated area, cover your work space with newspaper and spray the mason jars with red spray paint. It will take two coats. Allow them to dry between coats. We ran some errands.
Cut the green card stock into two inch leaf shapes. If you are having difficulties, start with an oval shape and go from there.
Punch a hole in the top of the leaves and tie two of them onto each mason jar with the garden twine.
Personalize the jars by adding the teacher’s names to the leaves.
Fill them with your choice of pens, pencils, or your choice!
Thanks to Scholastic for featuring this craft on their website.  I am so honored. Also, cxciting news! You can pick up a copy of my first book here. It’s called A Kid’s Guide to Keeping Chickens.

  1. OMGosh….I work at a school & I love this project! It would be cute to make the leaves out of green felt & embroider the teachers' names on them. The stores have such great deals on pencils right now too! You'd be surprised how many pencils teachers go through from all the kiddos 'borrowing' one ;P
