Giveaway: A Chicken Sign and Chicken Aprons

January 1, 2013

I was contacted a few months ago by chickenarmor.com.  They wanted to share with me their website along with their products- chickens signs and aprons.  As many of you know, last year I was excited to even discover that things such as chicken aprons were on the market to keep my Silkies safe while they were broody in the nesting boxes.  After all, I credited the the design of the hen apron for saving Dolly’s life. Since, then I have been a big fan and advocate of hen apron (also known as saddles).  They are fantastic to cover healing back wounds from feather pecking and over-amorous roosters.  They also are terrific as preventatives too. I always place hen apron on my Silkies when we are scheduled to go out of town because they are always going broody.

Predator eyes are affixed to the bases of the aprons.

Traditional hen aprons are created from fabric, snaps and elastic bands.  The ones offered from chickenarmor.com are different.  They are no frills but all function and are incredibly cost effective for large flock owners. They are created from a puncture proof, weatherproof type of material that reminds me of oil cloth. They are absent of snaps and elastics and come in one piece.  With a bit of finessing, they slip on over the wings. They are not as easy as the other saddles to put on the chickens but I easily caught on in no time at all.  My favorite part of the hen aprons are the eyes that deter predators.  Finally, another viable option that would work to deter birds of prey when flocks free-range. These aprons could easily be applied to flocks that are out during free-ranging and removed during times when they are locked safe in the coop. They are made in Colorado and come in two sizes, bantam or standard.

Chickenarmor.com also hand crafts many chicken signs.  They are great fun and would add charm and whimsy to the side of your chicken coop or garden gate.  They are 12″ x 18″ or 18″x24″, UV resistant and fully waterproof.  Some can even can be customized to your liking.

  1. ~ Happy 2013 ~ I love the idea of starting the New Year with a giveaway! I am a follower and I posted a note on chickenarmor.com that you sent me. Now if I had to pick something for a wish list it would be one of the 'Caution Attack Chickens' signs for the shed. Two of my roosters have started to jump on visitors. They sneak up and BAM!! I think it's kinda funny because they don't do it to me ~ Thank Goodness. Of course I would also love to have the aprons. Best Wishes for A Happy & Healthy New Year! pamelaannseitz@yahoo.com

  6. I have just started getting your blog via email here in Australia & would love three of those aprons & a sign for my bantam "Ozzie" chicks! I love reading about your home & weather, here it is mostly hot, does get cold here in Toowoomba during winter, & we do have the change of seasons in autumn. But it has only snowed about twice here, & it basically melts when it has fallen, a very rare occurrence,so seeing your winter landscape is lovely.! I have only had my 'ladies' about 10 months, & am still learning as I go, but really enjoy their personalities & quirks! Thanks again for a very lovely site. Happy New Year, Regards Sue

  8. Your signs are awesome! I would have to say that If I won, I would choose the chickens attack sign! So cute! and of course the aprons. I actually need one as two of my ladies seem to be opa's (my old rooster) favorite and are looking a little over-loved (and since here in Ontario it was -17 yesterday, a little cover is always welcomed:)

Happy Holidays and a very happy new year

  9. I really love the signs. Also if i won first place i would choose the farm fresh egg sign #1. If I won 2nd,3rd, or any other place I wouldn't be complaining. Being rainy here, the chicken saddle/aprons would be useful. I visited chicken armor and I am a follower of your blog.

  10. Wishilist? For sure the aprons with eyes! Our roosters were notoriously overeager with a few of the ladies. Then we moved and lost our flock, many I'm sure to hawks (I've seen them circling our house often since then).

Oh, and I've stopped by the facebook page!

    Love reading this blog!
