Chickens Eggs Stories from Our Nest

Record Egg

Ouch!  This beauty is from Oyster Cracker.  She laid it this morning.  It takes up my entire palm and two of my daughter’s hands.  I can’t believe some of the eggs she has laid, but this today is by far the largest!  I am so fascinated by the entire egg laying process.  As the hens sleep in the night, the outer egg shell is being created. Hens that are disturbed or scared in the night can lay malformed eggs or even stop laying them at all.  Full crops right before bed help too.  My girls enjoy a little chicken scratch right before bed, sort of like milk and cookies for the kiddos, only instead of insuring that they will sleep through the night, I am hoping for nesting boxes with eggs in the morning.

Hello friends, welcome! Follow along on our chicken, beekeeping, gardening, crafting and cooking adventures from Cape Cod.

  • Oh my. I think some extra special treats are in order for Oyster Cracker today. And let us know how many yokes when you finally crack that thing. Probably just two but I dunno. You might just have a triple on your hands.

  • Flock Mistress, she shared an entire zucchini with her fellow flock members! They loved that. I still have never had a double yolker but I am still hoping that one day….

  • wow! that was a biggin'! Our buffs used to lay the largest eggs like yours too! We don't see them that size with our Americana's though. Thanks for the chat today! 🙂 Feeling better already…

  • Nice pretty big egg 🙂

  • Wow, that sure is one big egg. I hope you make something extra special with it.

  • OH. MY. GOODNESS! You go Oyster Cracker! That's amazing. That HAD to hurt coming out, lol. I give my girls a treat before bed too, and I love to feel their full crops.

Melissa, I was wondering – may I email you to ask for advice on a few things??

    xo Helena

  • That had to hurt… It's a meal in itself 🙂

  • Wow! We are very impressed! Take pictures when you crack it open. What a good girl. She must really love you to make you such a big egg.

  • Thank you everyone for all of your lovely comments. I did not open the egg yet. Today was so busy getting prepped for the Hurricane :0

Yes, Helena, feel free to email me at pcmc2000@msn.com

I will share pics on the FB page when I crack it open!

Thank you all for such wonderful comments. I love to read them 🙂

  • Holy moly!!
Speaking of hurricane what's your plan for the girls?? I'm going back and forth on several things. My only fear is what if we have to evacuate!

  • Hi Debra, I just posted today about the hurricane. As an FYI, the Cape has never imposed mandatory evacuations. You might, however, want to have the girls in your garage. Keep me posted!
