Create Colorful Paper Chicken Friends

This past week I presented at the Mother Earth News Fair in Seven Springs, PA.  Each year, one of my favorite things to do is meet up with the kids attending the fair. I love to get kids excited about art and put on a workshop just for them.  This past year we did bookmarks and this year I decided to inspire the kids’ creativity with paper chicken friends.

Fluffy Layers: Mommy and Me Farm Aprons

This week I’m traveling on the road again for the next two weeks. I’m headed to the Country Living Fair in Columbus, Ohio, a ribbon cutting ceremony, and then off to the Mother Earth News Fair in Seven Springs, Pennsylvania. Before we left, I received a very special package from one of my favorite companies, Fluffy Layers. The owner, Tara, is so thoughtful and a Mom like me. She sent me something that she knew Maddy and I would just adore, these matching Mommy and Me Farm Aprons.

A Berry Sweet Pom Pom Craft

I used to love making pom poms as a little girls with my Mom. We would sit there for hours making them and putting them on hats, scarves and afghans that she knitted throughout the year. I was always intrigued with the “magic” of how the pom poms and tassels would come together. I’d watch her intensely, committing the techniques to memory in my seven year old mind. I can still “see” her working the yarn in her hands and fingers if I close my eyes. This past week, I decided to share my love of pom poms with my daughter.  She absolutely adores strawberries. So with that as our inspiration, we turned her favorite fruit into a sweet fluffy, bouncy ball of red and green strawberry pom pom for her backpack. I created a cardboard template that worked well with with her small hands and in no time we ended up with a dotted red pom pom ready for quite a hair cut.

Sometimes I compare my backyard to an oasis. My kids spend hours playing in the grass and the garden provides fresh vegetables for my family. It’s a place where I go to clear my head, a place where all my worries drift away. Because my family and I love my lawn and garden so much, I have given a lot of thought into keeping the backyard healthy. One of the best helpers I’ve found? My flock of backyard chickens – and, in turn, the feed they eat. I feed my chickens in the morning, let them free-range and forage throughout the day and then bring them into their coop at night. Not only does this keep the chickens happy, it also helps my plants keep growing! The chickens eat insects, aerate the lawn, love eating weeds and even produce fertilizer!

DIY: Magnetic Air Plant Terrariums

Sometimes I think I might be just as addicted to air plants as I am to succulents. Both are super easy to care for and really add so much diversity to my collection of houseplants. For these, I re-purposed some small tins into these magnetic air plant terrariums which are just perfect for my fridge. I think they’d also make a darling gift and favor for parties too.
